On The Beat Finally Closes It's Doors

For those in the know, On The Beat Records in London's West End has been a bastion of good music and an essential port of call for Record collectors of all genres in the capital . Sadly owner Tim Derbyshire is finally calling time after running the shop on the same site in Hanway Street for over 35 years.

He recently listed the shop, it's lease and all of the stock totalling over 50,000 records for £300,000 on eBay, causing quite a stir on the record scene. After several offers that fell short of the mark and a wealth of interest from the media, Tim is finally packing up the shop and putting everything into storage.

I've had the pleasure of digging here for the last 15 years and during that time have pulled out some real gems, including a minty copy of Impeach The President which nearly gave me a heart attack!

Tim is a real character and has an encyclopaedic sized knowledge of records, labels and music in general. After dropping by earlier today, he told me he hopes to perhaps move online and get something going in the near future so fingers crossed that this won't be the last we see of him!

If you're in the area On The Beat will be open for a few more days so be sure to drop by and visit this London institution before it closes it's doors for the very last time.

Sad times....
